about

This is my first modern composition. I wrote this work while I was a student. As you will hear, it is strongly influenced by some of the greatest composers of the early part of the twentieth century. The main influence is Edgard Varèse. Hopefully, you should detect a parallel with 'Octandre' which uses the same instrumentation. There are also similarities to some of Debussy's impressionist work, especially in the flute writing. The 'cutting' block chords at the end are clearly reminiscent of Stravinsky. Despite the external influences, I believe that this work shows the beginnings of a musical language that has some potential.

Unfortunately, the recording is quite old. The tape is worn and, despite my best efforts, some of the loud passages are distorted (by modern standards). There are also a few errors which I hope do not spoil your enjoyment.

This performance was recorded live in 1989.
